Harrogate has some fantastic things to do and see so why not visit this February half term (it’s just around the corner!).

We know the drill…you’re scratching your head to think of ways to keep the young ones occupied. We all know how picky children can get, no matter what age they are.

While it’s only fair to give your kids the needed lazy morning and their own time to do what they want to; it’s also important to have some fun family days out to experience new things and have fun together.

Luckily, Harrogate and Yorkshire have a lot to offer families looking to spend quality time together and make fantastic memories for the photo album.

Harrogate Climbing Centre

A classic day out guaranteed to tire out the entire family is a visit to the climbing centre. Whether you’re petrified of heights and want to overcome your fears, or you’re an expert who loves mini adventures like this, Harrogate Climbing Centre can cater for anyone with any amount of experience.

Boasting friendly and experience staff, Harrogate Climbing Centre welcomes everyone with opens arms. When you’re done getting adventurous, sit down in their café and have a look round their shop for a souvenir to take home. If it really takes your fancy, you can always come back for classes or even book the centre for a party.

Valley Gardens

February air can be harsh but that’s no excuse to turn your nose up at nature. Put on a warm coat and scarf and why not visit Valley Gardens. There are 17 acres of land to explore, with beautiful gardens, woodland and historical buildings. This has everything you need for a calming family day out. Valley Gardens is perfect at catering to everyone. It boasts a large children’s playground for the younger ones and a skatepark (BMX, skateboards and scooter friendly) for teenagers. While you’re there, grab a bite to eat at the Magnesia Well café. Dedicating a full day to Valley Gardens is a day well spent and is sure to make some wonderful photos to go in the memory box.

Mercer Art Gallery

Nurturing a child’s creativity is just as important as their academic subjects. Whilst this may be a bit too much for younger children, it could be just the perfect day for teenagers; especially those studying in art and design. One of Yorkshire’s most impressive and oldest art galleries, Mercer Art Gallery is truly a wonderful day out. Whether your kids are into modern art or would rather travel back in time, there’s something here for everyone.

The museum is full of life, bringing regular events and lectures for its visitors. Full of famous local and national names, there is a lot to explore in this vast showcase of art.

Ripon Workhouse Museum

Speaking of going back in time, what child isn’t curious about the Victorian era? Between learning about Jack the Ripper and Queen Victoria, somewhere along the line almost every child becomes fascinated with this era of our country. So how about taking them to see how it was really like back then?

The Ripon Workhouse Museum is a complete recreation of life for the poorest during the 19###sup/sup### century. The Workhouse Museum was designed to show the harsh reality of life for the workers there who slept in cells and worked around the clock to earn their keep.

The museum is beautifully tended to along with its gardens and restored to its former 19###sup/sup### Century glory with history seeping out of the walls. Every part of the Workhouse from the museum to the kitchen has been carefully restored and recreated to its original state. How’s that for time travel!

Swinton Estate Cookery School

Are your little ones always peeping into the kitchen and getting curious how flour can make such a mess in so little time? Maybe it’s a sign you have a young budding chef in your house! Cooking is a fantastic activity for kids; it’s messy and it’s delicious.

Run by the wonderful staff at Swinton Estate, a beautifully historic estate and hotel, during the February half term there are two classes especially for kids. There’s the Junior Chefs (10 – 14 years old) half day and Mini Chefs (6 – 9 years old) half day.

Experience doesn’t matter. This could be the first time the little ones ever done anything in the kitchen, the activities and staff work around your child to guide them safely through a kitchen and of course keep the whole event exciting.

Kidzplay

One of Harrogate’s largest play indoor centre, Kidzplay is the ultimate way to burn off your child’s energy. Sit back and relax in the café while the kids go do their thing. You can also book a number of classes that are regularly run by the wonderful staff. This includes baking, arts and crafts and even singing.

This is a win/win type of place where you can have the peace of mind that your children are safe and supervised and you can sit back and let go of all your worries. Owners Lisa and Andy are very passionate about their business and it really shows in the customer care.

Harrogate Indoor Funfair

If your kids are longing for the summer holidays where their adrenaline can be used up at the beach and seaside, give them a little taste of summer by attending the Harrogate Indoor Funfair. That’s right, it has all the lights, music and rides of a seaside funfair just indoors.

A variety of prizes, game stalls and rides, it’s fun for the whole family whatever the weather. Once inside with a wristband, rides are available to ride as many times as you want. This event is a fantastic way to inject some excitement into a gloomy February and it’s a fantastic excuse to get the kids out even in the rain!

Lost Babes in Space Pantomime

Appreciation for the theatre is important but getting kids away from the screen can be difficult. Lost Babes in Space could be wonderful cure to the mobile phone addiction. A futuristic space adventure based in 2069, this pantomime is full of jokes, adventure and it’s all for a good cause. All proceeds are heading to The Joanna Luty Memorial fund which supports teenagers affected by cancer.

Appropriate for all ages, it’ a great laugh for the whole family and multiple productions mean you can incorporate this into your day however you please.

RHS Garden Harlow Carr

RHS Garden Harlow Carr is preparing itself to be the ultimate place to bond kids with nature. Providing the right amount of fun and education, the half term week will be packed with fun activities appropriate for all weather.

All activities are set in the beautiful gardens and play areas with Betty’s café open all day to regain your energy with delicious food and a hot drink to warm you up.

This is also a wonderful opportunity to take beautiful photos with your family and take home a lot of great memories.

So pack up the wellies and raincoats, and head down to RHS Garden Harlow Carr for a day to learn and love nature.

Agility Fitness Park

There’s no way bad weather will stop kids from being energetic and being stuck indoors can be challenging. Although, being stuck indoors in the Agility Fitness Park in York is definitely the better option. This space is fully equipped with state-of-the-art obstacle courses which is the perfect way to test your fitness and inspire your kids to take up new challenges and build their confidence as well as health. The obstacles cater to adults and children and difficulties vary on what you choose. The staff are trained and friendly and are always on hand to assist you and motivate you to keep going. The Agility Fitness Park is guaranteed to bring home the kids absolutely exhausted and most definitely happy.
