A bit of a Harrogate institution, another clear favourite with the locals. This family run restaurant offers a cosy bistro style wine bar with excellent food downstairs – favourites include Beef cooked in Red wine with Horseradish dumplings or Roast Pork with crackling and apple sauce. The newly refurbished finer dining restaurant ( still very informal ) is located upstairs and features an extensive a la carte menu. You’re guaranteed an excellent meal in either restaurant. Here again, table reservation is a must.

Italian
Sasso
10 – 12 Princes Square, Harrogate, HG1 1LX
Tel: 01423 508838
A traditional, rustic Italian, family run restaurant, offering authentic Italian cuisine with a strong Bolognese influence – Stefano Lancelloti - owner and head chef is from a small town outside Bologna - this is by far the town’s best Italian restaurant. Beautiful fresh ingredients, everything is prepared on site, Stefano’s speciality is home made pasta, try the Lobster and courgette ravioli in a light lobster broth, or taglioni with roast duck sauce, garlic and fresh herbs. Located in a spacious basement restaurant in the very centre of town, the focus here is on quality food and excellent service ( a very good team of staff ) with understated furnishings, wonderful wines and some unique Italian artwork. Another fave with the locals - table reservation recommended.
Pizza Express
2 Albert Street, Harrogate, HG1 1JG.
Tel: 01423 531 041
A relaxed environment with tasty and affordable food. The classic chain is constantly developing delicious new dishes and toppings, combining them with old favourites, reasonably priced drinks and charm with the children. Whether you want a quick bite for lunch or somewhere relaxed for dinner, Pizza Express isn’t gourmet dining but does deliver good food in a laid back setting. The romana Pizzas are all worth a try, their size giving any food lover a challenge, but their taste making it well worth it.
French
Chez la Vie
92 Station Parade, Harrogate, HG1 1HQ
Tel: 01423 568018
Renowned for it’s excellent food, this is quite a special place to eat. More intimate than other restaurants it offers excellent quality and good value. It has a very loyal local following so important you book before turning up. They offer the town’s best Early Bird menu – v popular but you need to get in by 6.30pm and leave by 8.30pm. Their French onion soup is a definite favourite and they offer a very extensive fish menu as well as French staples such as Fillet de Beouf and a very tasty Fillet de Porc Roti. Very comprehensive wine list.
It is located in central Harrogate, over to the far side of the train station.
Oriental
The Orchid
28 Swan Road, Harrogate, HG1 2SE
Tel: 01423 560 425
This is one of the most well respected restaurants in Harrogate, combining a fusion of influences such as Thai and Malaysian cusine to create unusual mouthwatering dishes. We recommend being adventurous and trying something such as the glass noodle salad or the beef steak pagalog, which aren’t as scary as they sound! They have some good value menus for four people and a very reasonable Sunday Buffet. Best to ring and book as it can get full very far in advance.
